Submissions for 10/24/08

Greetings! Well, the site is less than a week old, and we've already seen a lot of interest grow and spread. I think the Facebook group has about 180 members, last time I checked. If you want to check out the Facebook group, you can see it here.

Congratulations to the first artists to be displayed on Well Fed Principles! Remember, if you don't see your work, don't be discouraged. Keep sending stuff, because it's always always ALWAYS welcome. Also, we might use your already-submitted work at a later date. So congrats, and I hope everyone enjoys their work. Make sure to leave comments!

This summer I went out to Missouri to help my grandparents move out of
the house they've been living in for over 40 years. One of the most
striking things about it was the front door. The colors, the pattern,
the size, the sound it made when you opened it. I had to take some
pictures of it before I closed it for good, and I'm happy with the way
they came out.

Words That Taste Like Strawberries

Snapping my gum,
tasting each burst
of strawberry,
Tapping my glossy red nails
against my chem notes,
Twirling my cheap, blue
Papermate pen,
I cannot keep my mind
on calculations of heat and energy,
And though my flow
of thoughts and words
is repeatedly interrupted
with useless numbers and measurements,
I still manage
to drift away,
Away from this constricting desk,
Away from the cruel clock
which seems to make time slow
endlessly,
Away from sleep-deprived
first-period blues,
And off
to thoughts
of you.

Thanks to all of the artists who contributed this week. Next week we'll see some from Melissa Reynolds and Kelsi Wilson, so make sure to check back, and most of all, KEEP SUBMITTING! I was so happy to have a big inbox full of submissions, and i loved reading everyone's work and seeing everyone's photos. Also, sorry for the late post. Had to stay after acting class with my partner for a bit.

One more thing for this week...

This past weekend, and dearly loved friend of ours passed away. Spencer Barnett had a lifetime struggle with heart problems, which eventually took his life at the too-young age of 21. He was a fantastic actor, a fantastic artist, and a great guy who could always make us laugh. His wit was dry and precise, never missing a beat. I will miss his smile, his laugh, his style, and his beautiful soul that always made me excited to see him. Here are some photos of him, and I'd like to dedicate the very first post of this artist's forum to him. I think he would have been a contributor, so this one's for Spencer.

If you knew Spencer, and would like to attend his memorial service, it will be held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, somewhere around Newtown, PA. More information to come on this.

As always, I feel obligated to give rising artists my personal feelings on topics.
Just to let you know, I will be telling you how I see these photos/poems as if I have received them as a submission for my literary journal The Rome Review (In stores this December).

TO ALEX OZENBERGER- A well made photo that is very sharp and distinct, and provokes interest well. However, I would not put it in my magazine, mostly due to the content of the photo is not strong at all.
TO DAN MULLIGAN- Another well made photo that starts to take my breath away due to its content. However, although it is a cool photo, it does not wow me enough to push it through to print, mostly because the most interesting thing in it, the smoke coming out of the mans face, is not exaggerated or brought out enough, and the overall pose of the person is not that powerful.
TO JULIA AND JOE TOMLINSON
Very well made. I would try to push this one through, but my fellow editors on the staff may deny it.The reasons will be that I see a lot of interesting things in this photo, but there is nothing amazing enough in this photo that my fellow staff members may demote this one.
TO SAM COREN
All of the pictures this week are good. I sort of like this one because of what is done with the light, but I dislike it because it doesn't do enough with the light. It may have to do with the fact that I do not care for Sonic Youth. I would not publish this.
TO SARAH ELIZABETH- Your poem, though very simple, fails to bring a huge amount of depth into the scene that you are trying to capture. This is a poem that I read once and would not remember, nor have a desire to read it again, and it sounds good but does nothing but depend on my relations with the feelings portrayed, rather than bring them out to their max potential on the page. I would not publish this poem.
ABOUT THE PICTURES OF SPENCER BARNETT
They are great, mostly because of how I remember the kid. I would publish the one with the shadow on his chest, but none of the others (from an editor's standpoint, history is irrelevant). They did bring a tear to my eye. R.I.P. Spencer, and shine on.

All the best,
Greg Nanni

Spencer! I remember when we tried to make hummus "like they make wine"...by stomping with our bare feet on a bunch of chickpeas. Disgusting, and totally the kind of idea Spencer was always coming up with. I will miss him. :(
